More vintage ABC ephemera ahead! This is the fourth in a series of vintage typography cards and images from the late 1800s. I love old papers and books and sometimes come across unusual pieces like this one.
This is a single heavy card, I did some research and it is a penmanship sampler, designed to showcase different lettering styles. These were very popular in the late 19th century, according to to University of Scranton. The school is home to a very large collection of alphabet and penmanship samples, many of which are public domain and available for download. Here is their rights statement for more details and permission for commercial use.
I did not find this exact one there, but it is very close to some of their vintage alphabet ephemera samples, and you may find other copyright free pieces there to use in your junk journal.
This is from a book dated 1890, and is part of a full set of typography samples or letter sets. Just click the image below to visit and explore the online collection.
The site is also home to a huge collection of flourishes, designs made with penmanship strokes. I downloaded this one to use in a notecard, the turkeys are perfect for fall and it is a public domain piece. Find this and hundreds of other free to use flourishes in the Flourish collection, just click the image below to visit.
Here is a closer look, but don’t try to right click and save, it is not a high resolution image. Instead, download a copy from the University of Scranton instead. Just click the image to go to the download page.
The original vintage typography ephemera sheet is a worn shade of tan, so I updated it a bit, I also made versions in different sizes. You can use this vintage ABC set in junk journals, as backgrounds or for tags and cards. Cut the letters apart or use as is.
Note that not all letters are present, it is missing J,M,O,Q,X, Y and Z
Here is the vintage ephemera typography file with letters in 2 sizes:
